Week 1: Longing Day 2
Mon, Dec 4
Invitation – Psalm 130:5
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope.
Scripture Reading – Genesis 1:1, 26-2:1a
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Humble yourself before God. Read again, out loud if possible. Which words or phrases are particularly striking? What do they reveal about God? What do they reveal about us? Respond to God accordingly, resting in Him.
- Praise God for the goodness of all creation.
- Confess how you might not care for God’s creation.
- Ask God for the eyes to see the inherent goodness in all that he has made.
Confessional Prayer – WSC 9 & 10
Lord, it is an amazing, even inconceivable, reality that you created all things out of nothing. We praise you for your infinite power and your abundant care in creating a world that is not only complex, but is truly beautiful. Our hearts delight in how you have made us in your image and likeness! Restore us to the goodness that you intended for all creation. Amen.
Blessing – Psalm 130:7-8
O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
